In my current journey going from Workout Wimp back to Workout Wonk, I’ve been exploring different ways to sweat and figuring out how to fit my workouts into my busy PR-pro-by-day-and-blushing-bride-to-be schedule. Here are a few things I’ve been trying out lately…
I got a trainer. That’s right, I’ve agreed to regular 5am workout sessions (YIKES) with Ellyn at Xsport Fitness to whip me back into shape. Her style involves almost all strength training, so I’ve become well acquainted again with exercises I love like TRX pull-ups and burpees. She also likes to throw in exercises I don’t love quite so much, like Russian twists.
I’m not going to sugar coat it — waking up for a 5am training session is pretty terrible. But when your day job is packed with conference calls and you’d rather spend your evenings with your hunky fiance, early morning workouts are pretty much the only option. Also, Ellyn is a really good motivator both during training and after. We’ve been using the MyFitnessPal app to track my eating habits and every so often I’ll get a friendly message from her reminding me of healthy suggestions (“Don’t forget to add veggies!”).
Okay, so I got trainer. What else have I been up to?
Checking out sweetgreen’s Passport events! In case y’all didn’t know, my favorite salad place teams up with local fitness instructors and studios to host FREE fitness classes for the community. And they’re pretty baller. Tonight I headed to U Street to get my butt kicked by MyBootcamp‘s Grant Hill at a tabata bootcamp hosted by the sweetgreen on W Street (you may recall our experience at MyBootcamp earlier this year, as well as our Revolve/MyBootcamp double header). We headed over to Meridian Hill Park where Grant led a group of us through three intervals of tabata exercises. If you’re not familiar with tabata, it’s basically 20 seconds of exercise followed by 10 seconds rest…and you repeat that for four minutes straight. We started with squats and push-ups, followed by lunges and mountain climbers, and finally burpees and V-ups. The bad news is I won’t be able to walk tomorrow. The good news is I got a chance to preview the new sweetgreen seasonal salad. Yum!
Where should I go for my next Workout Wimp to Workout Wonk adventure?
